These individuals put everything they had on the line to defend the United States of America. Though this debt is impossible to repay, we honor their memories by keeping their stories alive. The dedication they showed to their cause and fellow soldiers will continue to inspire Dayton residents far into the future. Philip Deis – A company commander in the Civil War, Phillip died in the Battle of Fredericksburg at the age of 22

Peter Dister – Commanding officer of the 58th Ohio Volunteer Regiment, killed leading his troop in The Battle of Chickasaw Bayou

Raymond France – One of the first soldiers of Montgomery County killed in WWI

John Ulrich Kreidler – Left officer’s rank in National Guard to fight Civil War with the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company C

Eugene Middleton – Killed in action during WWII

Tony Stein – Only Ohio WWII veteran to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor

Patrick Traynor – A Civil War veteran who reached the rank of Corporal in only four years
